Food Industry

In food and beverage packaging, it is essential that labels and codes remain clear and readable, regardless of material, processing method or print speed. Best-before dates, lot numbers, allergen declarations and barcodes all need to survive handling, chilling and transport without smudging or fading.

Common labelling challenges in food packaging

  • Diverse substrates — from paper cartons to flexible film pouches and foil-lined bags — each demand a different balance of adhesion and durability.
  • Cold and frozen storage can make lower-grade inks brittle or prone to flaking during transit.
  • High-throughput packing lines need ribbons that transfer cleanly at speed without ribbon wrinkle or voids in the print.
  • Regulatory labelling (allergens, nutritional information, date coding) must remain legible throughout the product’s shelf life.

Choosing the right ribbon formulation

For most food and beverage packaging — coated paper labels, flexible film pouches and cartons — a wax-resin ribbon offers the best balance of cost, print sharpness and resistance to light moisture and chilling. Where labels are limited to simple paper cartons handled indoors, a more economical wax ribbon can be sufficient. For products with longer shelf life, oily contents (sauces, oils, dairy) or frozen storage, we typically step up to wax-resin or resin for extra durability.

Full details on how each formulation performs are covered on our thermal transfer ribbon page.
